Genre Research - Magazine Adverts

Genre Research - Digipak/Album Covers

This cover is simple, yet effiective. The typography is interesting in the way that the album title is written on the back of the drummers hands.

The image on this cover is on the right hand side, rather than centered. This makes it different and the lighter, brighter colours stand out more against the black background. The band are pictured on this cover, reinforcing there image as a band.

Digipak Analysis

A digipak is usually made of card and folded like a book. It usually contains the CD, artist information and often lyrics and posters. A digpak is an alternative to jewel casing and is often used for CD singles or special editions of albums. Ocassionally, a taller version of this can be used for DVDs.
This particular digipak is for the an acoustic album from Oasis. This band is typically from the indie genre. There is not much to show this on the album, other than the bottom of the acoustic guitar. This is important because instruments, such as guitars and drums, are used heavily within this genre. The artistr is not used on the cover, however, star image is reinforced with using the guitar, showing that the band are musicians.
The colours used on this digipak are quite neutral, using creams and browns. This colour palette reflects the nature of the album, chilled and laid-back. If bright colours were used, the consumer would expect upbeat, maybe electronic, music.
The font, of the album title and band name, is quite simple. It has been used to break up the empty space at the bottom of the cover.

Genre Research - Music Videos

You Me At Six - Save It For The Bedroom: The editing and camera movements within this video are asthetically interesting. The video cuts quickly between narrative and performance, which is common in music videos for our chosen genre.

All American Rejects - Move Along: This image has a distinct aspect that we would like to experiment with in our music video. The lead vocalist of the band is dressed in different ways when he sings different words of the song. This is cut quickly. We would like to experiment with using this technique, but having different characters from the narrative singing the words from the title line.

The Futureheads - Heartbeat Song: This video is very colourful. It flicks between a narrative of a game show and performance of the band playing the song. We aim to combine a narrative and performance in our music video. This gives us inspiration into dofferent ways to shoot and edit.

The Twang Feat. Pro Green and Mike Skinner - Either Way: This video heavily features the vocalists and band of this song. There are a lot of meat shots in this video.

The Cribs - Mens Needs: This video comes from the indie genre, the same genre that we are looking at. We will take inspiration from this video in the way that it uses objectification of a woman to keep the male gaze. This is a performance video. We plan to use a performance in our video and this video has given us the idea to have girls walking around the band as they perform.

permission for track

This is the email message that we sent to Jet to seek permission to use there track 'Are You Gonna Be My Girl'. We sent this from a member of our groups MySpace page. It is important for us to seek permission for the track for copyright purposes.

initial ideas - word cloud

This is a thought cloud that we created to outline our initial ideas. We had a discusion about different songs we could use and the talked about the different ideas we had for each song. Whilst throwing ideas around, we decided on our definite song choice (Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl). We will, later, look at these ideas and develop them further, as to create a clear narrative for our music video.
