Digi pack

Here are all of the parts of the Digipak we created to support our music video. We decided to put in exclusive pictures of all of the band members, alongside the lyrics to the songs on the album. We researched the songs on the album to find the lyrics. We also decided on the colours of red, white and black as we thought it reflects the genre more.

Tuesday, 9 November 2010

This is a magazine advert that we created to promote our music video and band. The colours and fonts used reflect the ones used in the digipak. We used the image of the lead vocalist of the band, from our video, as a promoting tool. Real media products would also use this technique to sell products and make people aware of their products.

Call sheet

This call sheet is a rough outline of where the video will be shot and what mise-en-scene would be considered. We all put our contact details on to ensure that we could always contact each other during the production of our video.

This is a rough cut version of our music video. We still have more footage to capture and a lot more editing to do to create our final product.

Making a digi pack

This first image shows the title and band name been added, we used the same font on both but different sizes. we decided that the colours used should be red and black, most of the writing is filled with red and outlined with black apart from three letters in black so that is would stand out more. The colours used are also used on the poster because we wanted the same style and theme to be used to make our products similar and recognisable.
This next image shows the shapes been added for the band logo, this is also the same colours of red and black. The logo had to resized for the album cover because we didn't want it take up too much room and also we didn't want it to be the main focus on the cover.
We decided that the main image on our album cover should be of the lead singer of the band, for this we took a screen shoot from our music video and copied in on to the cover. We kept the background of the cover a plain white colours because the cover already had enough colour on it and we didn't want it to be to harsh with an overload of colour.
We then added the age restriction at the top of the cover because some of the songs contained words that may not have been suitable for younger listeners.
For the back page we wanted to keep the on going theme of the the matching front and colours so the songs title are mixture of black and red. The moon shapes than we used for our logo have also been used so there wouldn't be any dead space and also it would relate to the front cover more. To make it look more professional we added are bar code and price to the back cover.
For the inside pages of the digi pack we decided to put in the lyrics and more images of the music video, on the first inside page we used three image and put them along the bottom of the page; two images of the full band and one of the singer close up and then we applied a black boarder around it. We tried to make every image interesting in some why and tried to prevent them looking too similar by small amounts of colour, using effects on the images and also adding boarders. We the put all the pages together with a total 15 pages including the front and back page.

This animatic outlines the way we want our video to flow, shot-by-shot. We came up withy ideas by brainstorming and came up with a narrative story line. I then sketched out the shots, trying to include what we wanted in the frames. We edited this on imovie in order to get the images in time with the beats of the track.

Genre Research - Magazine Adverts

Genre Research - Digipak/Album Covers

This cover is simple, yet effiective. The typography is interesting in the way that the album title is written on the back of the drummers hands.

The image on this cover is on the right hand side, rather than centered. This makes it different and the lighter, brighter colours stand out more against the black background. The band are pictured on this cover, reinforcing there image as a band.

Digipak Analysis

A digipak is usually made of card and folded like a book. It usually contains the CD, artist information and often lyrics and posters. A digpak is an alternative to jewel casing and is often used for CD singles or special editions of albums. Ocassionally, a taller version of this can be used for DVDs.
This particular digipak is for the an acoustic album from Oasis. This band is typically from the indie genre. There is not much to show this on the album, other than the bottom of the acoustic guitar. This is important because instruments, such as guitars and drums, are used heavily within this genre. The artistr is not used on the cover, however, star image is reinforced with using the guitar, showing that the band are musicians.
The colours used on this digipak are quite neutral, using creams and browns. This colour palette reflects the nature of the album, chilled and laid-back. If bright colours were used, the consumer would expect upbeat, maybe electronic, music.
The font, of the album title and band name, is quite simple. It has been used to break up the empty space at the bottom of the cover.

Genre Research - Music Videos

You Me At Six - Save It For The Bedroom: The editing and camera movements within this video are asthetically interesting. The video cuts quickly between narrative and performance, which is common in music videos for our chosen genre.

All American Rejects - Move Along: This image has a distinct aspect that we would like to experiment with in our music video. The lead vocalist of the band is dressed in different ways when he sings different words of the song. This is cut quickly. We would like to experiment with using this technique, but having different characters from the narrative singing the words from the title line.

The Futureheads - Heartbeat Song: This video is very colourful. It flicks between a narrative of a game show and performance of the band playing the song. We aim to combine a narrative and performance in our music video. This gives us inspiration into dofferent ways to shoot and edit.

The Twang Feat. Pro Green and Mike Skinner - Either Way: This video heavily features the vocalists and band of this song. There are a lot of meat shots in this video.

The Cribs - Mens Needs: This video comes from the indie genre, the same genre that we are looking at. We will take inspiration from this video in the way that it uses objectification of a woman to keep the male gaze. This is a performance video. We plan to use a performance in our video and this video has given us the idea to have girls walking around the band as they perform.

permission for track

This is the email message that we sent to Jet to seek permission to use there track 'Are You Gonna Be My Girl'. We sent this from a member of our groups MySpace page. It is important for us to seek permission for the track for copyright purposes.

initial ideas - word cloud

This is a thought cloud that we created to outline our initial ideas. We had a discusion about different songs we could use and the talked about the different ideas we had for each song. Whilst throwing ideas around, we decided on our definite song choice (Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl). We will, later, look at these ideas and develop them further, as to create a clear narrative for our music video.

Magazine advert Analysis

Adverts like this are found in all types of magazines, especially those that are specifically written for music fans, such as NME. This particular advert is for Goldfrapp's Headfirst album. Their music is usually from the pop genre. The colours used are vibrant and eye-catching. The only image on the advert is of the female lead vocalist of the band. This picture dominates most of the advertisment. The layout of the image is visually ineteresting in the way that her face seems to be faded behind the clouds. This is different to most adverts as bands try to make there image stand out. As the album is called Headfirst, it is fitting that the picture is of only her face. This creates a visual link for fans of the band and their music. The pastel colour pallette goes well with her pale complexion. The font used to display the band and album names is iconic to the band and has been used on previous albums and singles they have released. The way that the text is laid out is also important. The band name or logo tops the page and the release date and name of the album are at the foot of the page. Having the page set up in this way allows the image to take over. The colours of both text and image are from a cooler colour pallette. Adverts like these are successful because they are direct and to the point. They make the consumers aware of, and want, the new products.

9 Frame Analysis of a Music Video

Green Day 21 Guns (2009) Directed by Marc Webb

Shot 1/ 0.38 Minutes: The close-up, or meat shot, of Billie Joe’s face, establishes him as the lead singer and also the narrator of the video. The framing of the shot, with the shallow focus relates to the genre of the song. It is framed so that the singers head dominates, showing his importance. The shallow focus ensures that the emphasis is on Billie Joe’s face. Again, the genre is also established by the dark make up on his eyes. This is typical of more rock and alternative band and singers. The microphone included in the shot shows his role in the video. This shot comes from a cutaway from the narrative of the video to show us the performance used.

Shot 2/ 1.09 Minutes: This long shot shows changes to coincide with the music and lyrics. Overall the music video for ’21 Guns’ shows illustration through narrative. The music has a higher tempo which goes with the narrative to show all is not right with the scene we are witnessing. The character is central in the frame, suggesting that she is central to the story. Visible in the shot are aspects of a ‘normal’ home. However there is writing on the wall and the bullet holes through the walls, scattering the outside light into the room. The costumes used are black in this frame, which is a running theme throughout the video. This frame illustrates the lyrics and title of the song.

Shot 3/ 1.55 Minutes: This low angle shot uses a shallow depth of field to show the importance of the flashing telephone. The background of the shot seems to be at a slightly odd angle. This could reflect the bizarre situation of the narrative. The main prop in this shot is the phone. This suggests that the people on the outside of the house are trying to contact those on the inside. The lighting seems quite murky in this frame. This could be explained by the dust, caused by the gunshots. During the shots previous to this, the cuts had been slower. This is due to the fact that the music had become softer.

Shot 4/ 2.08 Minutes: The over the shoulder shot of the mirror’s reflection looks quite surreal due to the broken glass. The reflection is shattered and shows the boys face distorted and the girl is seen twice. This looks quite spooky. The reflection is the only thing visible in the frame. This shows the destruction caused by the guns and could suggest the cracks in the relationship of the two characters. Again the colours, costume and lighting are all dark again, carrying on the theme and style of the video.

Shot 5/ 2.27 Minutes: The chorus has picked up again in this shot, a close-up of a bullet ripping a hole in a sofa. We see this action from the side. This makes it look more powerful. The vase in the background of the shot is still intact. This could suggest that there is hope, even throughout the destruction. This shot helps the narrative drive of the video and again illustrates the lyrics.

Shot 6/ 2.49 Minutes: A medium shot of the fish tank, leaking after being blown apart by a bullet, packs impact to the video. The addition of the telephone inside the tank suggests that the female character has taken control. She has thrown the phone into the water in disregard. It seems that she doesn’t care about the situation anymore and has left the safety of the corner to walk across to meet the male. The water pouring out creates urgency within the scene. The setup of this shot is against the wall of the home. The darker colours stand out against the natural walls.

Shot 7/ 3.09 Minutes: The long shot of the couple together and the wall of the house shows the closeness of the two characters. This is emphasised by how much space there is surrounding them in the frame. The light coming through in rays from the holes in the walls makes the shot look more powerful. This is the first time we have seen the couple touch, as the song and video draw to their climax.

Shot 8/ 3.26 Minutes: This is one of the most powerful shots of the entire video. It shows Billie Joes guitar solo. The high key lighting has gone and Billie Joe has been lit from beneath, which suggests his power, and from the intermittent explosions behind him. This shot shows the performance side of the video. He is central in the frame and shot at a slightly lower angle, making him look taller and more powerful. The darker clothing used in this shot makes Billie Joe blend into the background until he becomes more visible when the explosions happen behind him.

Shot 9/ 4.31 Minutes: An establishing shot of the whole band playing is the first time we see the band performing as a whole. The narrative seems to have come to an end and the focus is on the performance of the band. The side view of the band allows each member to be seen within the frame. The costumes used are typical to the band and goes with their already established image.

Analysis of a Chosen Music Video
